Glanville Geospatial Deployed To Assist In Sinkhole Crisis
In the early hours of the 1st December a culvert damaged by Storm Burt caused a significant collapse in a residential area of Pant, South Wales.
Labelled a sinkhole and causing major disruption and the evacuation of occupants of the estate, the collapse made headlines across the UK.
Case Study in Detail
Overview
Whilst the media flocked to witness the event, so did emergency services and council engineering teams. Our close friends and partners at EDS (Edwards Diving Services) were to play a significant role in the engineering solution and called in Glanville Geospatial to assist with emergency investigations.
Initially our team completed inspections of the culvert with our Elios 3 Drone to ensure there was no further damage to the culvert. Whilst this was being completed the team collected ground penetrating radar over the surrounding area to check for signs of other voids that may cause additional damage to the estate.
As the collapse grew, a second deployment later in the week was executed in order to complete volumetrics of the hole itself and to plot the culvert alignment to aid the location of a buried manhole that would be needed for access later in the project.
We were proud to play our part in helping residents to return home in time for Christmas. The project illustrated how our partners can rely on our response to their needs and how our devotion to the application of the latest technology and workflows can provide solutions for any measurement, inspection or monitoring requirements.
